The story line is very original, a slight twist of sci-fi but just to serve the plot. The descriptions of antebellum South and the life on the plantation are heartbreaking but, alas so true. They not only serve the story but are also educational material to learn more about American history. The parallels between modern and antebellum america bring about a lot of questioning on the parts of the readers. I would particularly recommend this book as a teaching material on the history of African-American history. Octavia's writing style is simple and highly effective.
